David Almaguer

“I am not one who likes to talk about myself. My art doesn’t come from one of these great “artist lives”. To me being an artist is not something that I chose to do, it was what I had to do. Other kids wanted to be doctors or policemen or firemen when they grew up. I have always been an artist.

The thing about street graffiti is that its all about the fame – who can get up the most and the biggest. It was fun, but there is just too much competition in that world. Someone slashes your work and goes bigger, then you slash theirs and you go bigger, it never ends. I got out.

I don’t have time to cook up words for someone who thinks they know more about my work than me. My work is tedious enough without concocting elaborate stories to back up each piece. I try to let my work speak for itself. I want to make something that I haven’t seen. I want to make something that you haven’t seen. The bottom line is that I want to make badass art.”
